A Pro Among Pros

A Pro Among Pros

The kids were a little restless last night, so an early trip to drop off them off at nana's and pa's before our softball game made sense. While my wife went outside to tend to the kids' restlessness, I spotted the newest edition of the World Series of Poker Main Event being shown on ESPN. Since I haven't had time to clear off my DVR of the first four episodes, I decided to grab some couch and become a poker fanboi for an hour.

Scotty Nguyen and "Miami" John dominated the episode acting like old war buddies while seated at the Milwaukee Best Light feature table. They chatted away about being a pro and Scotty not having the time due to personal appearances to actually play the game that paid for his Aston Martin. Sam Simon, the creator of the Simpsons, also got a little face time racking up an impressive amount of chips after busting recent WPT Legends of Poker champ, 1995 WSOP Main Event champ Dan Harrington.

But the clips I was in tune about was Sabyl Cohen's two hands and her reactions afterwards. She lost a cooler when her QQ was bested by KK on a Jack-high flop and received a teddy bear in a heart balloon as a consolation prize. Then later on lost a coin flip with a pair and flush draw versus "Miami" John's top pair when the river card caught her flush but gave "Miami" John a full house. No whinning, no walking around the table, no fist slams, just a cute laugh and determination showing on her face to take this tourney down. I hope both men and women who aspire to be at that table take something away from her professionalism shown under duress. She kept the game at its most basic level, a competition, which is based on the cards dealt, not the amount of patches you can acquire from poker sites or the loudest victory/defeat dance your body can contort to.

Well played Sabyl.
