Filed in archive Poker Laws on October 31, 2007
As many online poker players know there is a group from the Poker Players Alliance currently in Washington D.C. lobbying for our game to become legalized and regulated. As you'll see from the YouTube clip below, many mistruth and selective hearing tactics are taken by groups opposed to the legalization of online poker or gambling.
Charmaine Yoest from the Family Research Council manages to try tie online poker in someone's home into crime and prostitution rates being raised because a father of two likes to play five dollar sit and go tournaments on Full Tilt after his kid brushes his teeth and gets read a Thomas the Tank Engine story. Howard Lederer goes to bat for the good guys as he counters the "no one is securing the websites for kids" accusations and other uneducated guesses at the world of online gambling's ins and outs. Lederer explains that several checks are in place for credit card transactions and ID checks for potential underaged players. He also urges for regulation to even further strengthen these checks.
