As the "stars" of poker shine brightly upon the center stage more and more often, the causal fan looks forward to seeing the Greensteins, Brunsons, and always exciting when he's not getting his behind tattoo'd, Gavin Smith.
Prehaps it wasn't flashy, lacked some "star" power, but Raj Patel outlasted 414 other players to take down first prize at the World Poker Tour event at the foxwoods casino in Ledyard, Connecticut.
For the complete story hop over to the WPT website but here's how Patel became a new WPT champ:
Raj Patel raises to T240,000 from the button. Paul Matteo calls.
Flop comes K53
Matteo bets T400,000 and Raj calls.
Turn is the K
Matteo bets T400,000. Raj calls.
River is the 7
Matteo checks. Raj moves all-in. Matteo calls.
Raj turns over 64. Matteo turns over K2
Raj hits his straight on the river and wins the Foxwoods Poker Classic. He called each street hoping to fill his open ended straight draw and lucked out hitting his seven on the river. Matteo turned three kings, yet lost to a river straight card.
Paul Matteo will take home $643,275 for second place. Raj Patel earns the title and $1,272,905.
